The Renewable Energy Working Group (REWG) in Palestine was created in June 1st, 2016 and brings together Palestinian Governmental Bodies; Private Sector including Electricity Companies; Palestinian and International NGOs; Donors; Universities; Local authorities; UN Agencies on an equal footing. This REWG was created as part of the project activities entitled “Improving the capacities of local authorities to develop and implement sustainable energy efficiency practices and renewable demonstration actions”. The project is funded by the European Union through SUDEP regional program (Supporting the Southern Neighbourhood Partnership cities in the implementation of Sustainable Urban Demonstration Energy Projects) and is being implemented by Applied Research Institute – Jerusalem (ARIJ) in partnership with Tubas Municipality and GEREDIS (Spanish Institute).

The aim of this created REWG is to bring all stakeholders in the field of renewable energy under one network as a coordination platform to optimize the utilization of available resources and experiences and contribute in improving the national strategies, plans in regards to renewable energy sector in a sustainable approach which will contribute in improving the quality of life and the livelihood of Palestinian people.

The Network Mandates include:

    1. To create mechanisms of communication and coordination among different stakeholders in renewable energy subsector consistently;
    2. To contribute in developing, improving, and implementing the strategies and action plans at national level ;
    3. To share the experiences, plans and best practices among the network members;
    4. To discuss opportunities and challenges those are meeting the renewable energy subsector regularly.
    5. To develop responding and follow up mechanisms and actions towards developing the renewable energy subsector.
    6. To build the awareness of the Palestinians towards the economic and environmental impacts of adopting the renewable energy and improving energy efficiency in their houses, organizations, production facilities and public places.

The Group Meetings:

A. First meeting:

The first group meeting was held on June 1st, 2016 in Ramallah. The aim of the meeting was to create the Renewable Energy Working Group in Palestine. The meeting was attended by 15 persons from different related stakeholders. For further details on the first meeting. 

B. Second meeting:

The second group meeting was held on March 13th, 2017 in Ramallah. The aim of the second meeting was to present the project progress to all related stakeholders as well as developing the renewable energy working group action plan and follow-up mechanisms. C. Third meeting:

The third group meeting was held on May 15th, 2017 in Jericho. The aim of the third meeting was to present SUDEP-Tubas project progress, JDECo activities in the field of Renewable Energy as well as to present its facilities, in addition to the updates by the REWG members about their activities in the sector of renewable energy.
